Horace Arthur Milton (Ch) K 15863, Stoker 1st Class.


Horace was born on 11th December 1893 and baptised at St Michael on 21st January 1896 in Folkestone, Kent to parents Horace and Annie, the middle of three sons by the 1901 census. The family lived at Military Tavern on the High Street of Sandgate where Horace Snr was a publican.


Horace worked at a hairdresser’s for a time before joining the Navy on 7th August 1912 for a twelve year service. He was recorded as being 5’4” tall with brown hair and grey eyes.

He trained as HMS PEMBROKE II until 13th December 1912, joining HMS VANGUARD on 14th December as a

Stoker 2nd Class. He rose to Stoker 1st Class on 19th June 1913 and was on board during the Battle of Jutland.


He was awarded the Star, Victory and British war medals although it is not recorded in Navy ledgers who they were issued to; his pension was awarded to his father.
